Freeman advances DarkSky initiatives at Channel Pointe and Tower Hill

The Carl M. Freeman Companies announced this week the implementation of DarkSky-compliant lighting at two of its coastal communities — Channel Pointe near Fenwick Island and Tower Hill near Lewes — marking, representatives said, a continued commitment to environmental stewardship, wildlife preservation and thoughtful community design.

At Channel Pointe, the installation of DarkSky-compliant streetlights as part of the community design, they said, “reflects a proactive commitment to reducing light pollution and preserving the natural nighttime environment. These lighting solutions not only enhance residents’ ability to enjoy clear, star-filled skies, but also play an important role in supporting migratory birds and local wildlife.”

Similarly, Tower Hill celebrated the ribbon-cutting for its new DarkSky-compliant streetlights on March 25 — “an initiative driven by the passion and leadership of the community’s HOA and homeowners. The project reflects a shared dedication to conservation and responsible development,” they said, with collaboration from key partners including Delaware Electric Cooperative, K. Hovnanian Homes, and representation at the ribbon-cutting from the Sussex County Council and the Lewes Chamber of Commerce.

DarkSky-compliant lighting is designed to minimize glare, reduce skyglow and direct light downward where it is needed — benefiting both residents and the surrounding ecosystem. The efforts align with a broader movement to protect coastal environments and migratory patterns increasingly impacted by artificial light.

“Preserving the natural beauty of our communities is rooted in how we live in harmony with the environment around us,” said Michelle Freeman, president and CEO of the Carl M. Freeman Companies. “DarkSky initiatives are an important step in protecting our night skies, supporting migratory wildlife and honoring the rhythms of nature — so future generations can experience these special places just as they were meant to be.”

“Through initiatives like these, Carl M. Freeman Companies continues to demonstrate leadership in sustainable community development — balancing human connection with conservation and fostering partnerships that enhance both quality of life and environmental responsibility,” representatives said.
